If you are a person who likes scary movies, but not the ones that would make you have a heart attack this one is for you. This movie appeals to younger children or older people who can not handle extreme fright.
When the movie first starts it appears as it would be a great movie, but as it progresses it seems to be the opposite. The plot was great, but the director of the movie did not do a good job of putting his ideas well on film. For example, every time you think an exciting part is coming nothing happens. The music also makes you anticipate a scary scene, but once again it sets you up for failure. I would have liked to see the sitter struggle more with the killer. The movie could have also showed the friend Tiffany, and the live in maid Rosa being murdered. This would have added more graphic details to the movie.
I kept waiting for something to happen. I was disappointed by this movie. Although this movie was full of suspense there was not enough action to weigh it out. This is a good movie if you want to scare your kids, but if you’re older than 18 it’s not the movie for you. You can only show so much with a movie being PG 13. This movie was not my taste. Critics on Rotten Tomato describe this film as excruciating bore."If you answer you may be bored to death” said John Wirt.
Although this film was not of my taste, and has received many bad reviews, the box office shows that the domestic total gross for When a Stranger Calls was 47, 860,214. According to Studio estimates, complied by Exhibitor Relations, When a Stranger Calls made about 22 million within the first weekend. It was also nominated for the Best Thriller Award at the Golden Trail Awards.
This film is based around the horror movie rule of not answering the phone. And has one of the classic questions "Have you checked on the children lately"? As I stated earlier the plot and the suspence was there, but the horror and action was not.
This film opens with a babysitter, and three children being killed. It then goes to Jill Johnson who is being punished by her parents because she went over her cell phone limit. For her punishment she has to baby sit for some of her parent’s friends. While baby sitting she gets a private phone call. “Have you checked on the children lately”? She then calls the police to report the call, but they told her it was not a real threat. The police went ahead and traced the call only to find out it was coming from inside the house.
After she finds out the killer is in the house she later finds her friend Tiffany, who was at the house with her earlier, dead. She ran to go get the children and they hid in another bathroom. While trying to escape the killer, she found Rosa, the live in maid, dead in the atrium. As the kids escape she is almost caught by the killer, but stabs him in the hand pinning him to the floor and runs out. The police were already outside by this time and the killer was arrested.
As Jill recovers in the hospital she has a dream that the killer is calling her and she sees his showdown. She is obviously tormented and psychologically disturbed by this tragic event.
