Pioneer in Horror: M. Night Shyamalan

Here are some horror movies and a director I have completely forgotten about. M. Night Shyamalan is one of my favorite directors despite how I feel he has a formula for each movie he directs. I've seen only three of his films in their entirety: Signs, Sixth Sense, and The Village. Shyamalan, who needs an easier name to spell, delivers a movie with some sort of revelation or twist at the end of each of his movies. So let me give a brief overview of these three and maybe I'll come back to them one day.

I remember seeing Signs and finding probably the most terrifying moment was when Mel Gibson is watching the news and one of the creatures walks by on a home video. I love aliens and was very excited when this film came out. Definitely not your traditional horror movie, but will definitely leave you with a feeling afterwards. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone.

"I see dead people..." It's one of those movie quotes that will never leave pop culture. Sixth Sense was a movie i never felt like I really needed to see until I finally sat down and watched this film all the way through. I knew there would be a twist at the ending and sort of had a hunch from some clues early on. This movie was worth watching again and reminded me of a time before Haley Joel Osment didn't have any DUIs and Bruce Willis didn't have to always be jumping from moving cars. Definitely not a terrifying or gory horror movie, but more sophisticated and smart which I love, an easy recommendation.

"Oh berries, what a splendid present." Ever hear anyone quote this line before? I sure as hell haven't. The conversations in this movie are painful. Any word that the main character Ivy says is agony and i want to stick my hand in a toaster. After seeing Signs and Sixth Sense I was excited to see this movie. I was thrilled, I wanted to see what Shyamalan cooked up this time. Let me tell you, nothing more than a crap-fest of mindless dialogue of seemingly constipated villagers. Shyamalan had such a great idea for the twist element in this movie and i was disappointed about how it was executed. There was maybe one almost scary scene, but other than that, this movie just falls apart with the bad characters. Some will defend it but Mr. Shyamalan please no more movies about annoying villagers. Go see this movie if you want, I'm not going to make you unless you want to try and look cool and quote one of Ivy's brilliant lines, "We have the magic rocks. They will keep us safe." What.... The.... Hell... Seriously Shyamalan is a great director, this movie is does not belong under his name and should be erased from all existence.

Movie Buff 11:11 said...

i am so tired of people trashing the village, it is a good movie...just because it is not a "monster movie" people get mad. the truth is the movie is so much more that a monster movie, it is something else all together. it is a movie about isolationism and the extremes people will go to to avoid the loss of loved ones. as for the monsters not being real, there are real monsters. the monsters are the killers of all those victims the monster is the evils of man. stop trashing this movie, it has some great camera angles and it is a great story with good acting.

To each his own, movie buff. But I don't plan on seeing this one anyway. The Sixth Sense was only so-so.
