Death Proof...

We all know already what my favorite film experience this year was Grindhouse. I already reviewed the first half of the double feature movie, Planet Terror, and feel it's time we take a look at the second half. I'm going to be honest, when I first saw this movie in theatres, I was so hungover on adrenaline from Planet Terror and the fake upcoming movie trailers. I was having difficulties paying attention. My focus was wandering around the theatre and whispering Machete quotes to my friends. After Grindhouse, I talked to people who saw the film I discovered a lot of people liked Death Proof a lot more. Even more surprising were critic reviews for Death Proof were significantly better. So along with the two separate DVD scam I purchased the DVD. As far as DVD goes, I was much more pleased with Planet Terror's film and fake trailer as where Death Proof only had the movie and no trailers. That infuriated me, those three trailers may forever be lost to the confines of black market Youtube. If you ever want to see them in poor quality they were entitled: "Don't,""Thanksgiving, and "Werewolf Women of the S.S." Anyways on to Death Proof...

Classic Quentin Tarantino comes to mind first. Witty Dialogue and lots of conversations. After the second viewing, a lot of the dialogue seemed funnier the second time. I noticed several more jokes and purposeful camera flaws. The plot begins with a group of girls traveling between bars. The group encounters a man simply known as Stuntman Mike who decides to take the girls on ride of terror. You know what's great about this movie? The simplicity of the plot. There is a total lack of plot and the camera just follows a group on a hit list of a madman. It's great how you remain interested during every conversation. Sometimes the conversations appear a little overdone and unrealistic, but that's what Tarantino does. As far as the "girls" of this movie you got some interesting acting jobs by Rosario Dawson and Rose McGowan. A lot of the actress from Planet Terror were reused to resemble typical Grindhouses I suppose. Kurt Russell as the retro culture loving Stuntman Mike is wear the acting shines. He creates a very unique killer for a slasher movie.

I really can't say too much about this movie. Most people know there is a simple background with Stuntman Mike just going on a killing spree with his "100% death proof" car. The whole movie altogether is ingenious and great for any Tarantino fan. It has a great comedic undertone that I love. You'll be laughing and waiting on the edge of your seat building up to the car chase scenes.cThe DVD was a bummer for not having any other Grindhouse specific features such as the trailers. This movie definitely stands alone and almost seemed like it wanted to break away from the whole Grindhouse combination. I really hope a Grindhouse 2 or both original films released together are released again so everyone can see what they missed. If you have the chance go grab the Grindhouse DVDs. They definitely don't disappoint!

Planet Terror...

I have been blabbing and waiting for this movie to be released on DVD since opening day when I saw it in theatres. Well I finally have it in my possession and probably going to watch it with different friends about 5 times this month. Planet Terror is an instant classic and more re-watchable as Janet Jackson's halftime performance. For those not in the know, Grindhouse was a multi-director film released in June earlier this year with Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino both directing a full length feature film and combining it into one with multiple fake trailers for other films by directors such as Eli Roth.

It was definitely a shame that the movies were not sold together on one DVD and they conned me into paying for another DVD to acquire Tarantino's Deathproof (with the rest of the fake trailers), but hey both are great films. If your pockets are thin though Planet Terror in my eyes in the better investment due to its re-watchablility and the best trailer fake trailer for Machete (which is being made into a real film). The DVD has a lot of extra features, but most are mainly interviews and really all I ever want is the movie with a few extended scenes which are certainly part of this package.

The movie itself is probably the most "badass" or "manly" movies you'll ever see as stated by friends of mine. I remember walking into the theatre not interested in this movie at all, knowing relatively little about the concept or plot of the movie. I was hooked instantly with the humor, violence, gore, and visuals. You get warmed up with the fake trailer for Machete, and have a few minutes to brace you for your feature film. The pre-film credits roll in with Rose McGowan go-go dancing. The outrageous storyline begins as you follow a convoy to a military base with escaped creatures lurking. The second you see Bruce Willis emerge after a tense confrontation scene, you know there is going to be an insane shootout. Even when you see Quentin Tarantino acting in a small role, you know he's going to meet his maker in some ridiculous over the top death scene. The dialogue switches from under to over dramatization with sarcastic tones full of humor in almost every sentence and plays an important to the plot. Surprisingly yes, there was a plot, and the way the plot intertwines with each likable character and moment makes for a very enjoyable viewing. I would love to talk more and give a more in depth review about the whole plot and visual surprises, but I hate spoiling movies and feel you're much better off buying this and seeing it for yourself.

I highly suggest buying this film and watching it with anyone who would appreciate this insane film. This movie will take you on a ride and never want to get off. Beginning to end is pure entertainment. This movie has received great acclaim from both film critic and the movie community and is something special I wish more people had a chance to see in theatres. So go out and buy this DVD!
