So when you're 8-10 years old, you're learning how the world works better, you're realizing fourth grade teachers are out to get you, and that PG-13 movies rock. Upgrading from family and Disney crap(I am neither confirming nor denying all films created by Disney are crap) to more violent and learning some new bad words to impress your friends at school is a feeling that can never be duplicated again. It's almost like realizing the rest of the world isn't as innocent as your little suburban home.
Now let's take an outside look at this film. Sphere was released in 1998 with little mainstream success. A few popular actors led the main roles including Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sharon Stone. Looking on Imdb it says Queen Latifah was in it so you know this movie was a winner. I'm not going to lie, I recently watched this movie and it really sucks. If you're hanging with your friends and they want to watch Sphere your better off drowning yourself. Well maybe it wasn't that bad, but why would i want to tell you all about such a terrible film? It's more about the fears you have when you were young, mine was specifically drowning, and this movie has a hell of a lot of water.
The plot takes you into this crew that has to inhabit an underwater laboratory and run tests on this strange object that crashed into the water. Through out the film there are multiple references to 20000 Leagues Under the Sea and a bunch of obvious character you know are gonna meet their maker from some stupid swimming accident. As the film progresses you learn about this alien object and what happened to the crew before. The scary portion of this film for me was just being trapped so far underwater with no way to escape to the surface. I remember some of the death scenes like this one scene of a woman(Queen Latifah?) getting stung to death by jellyfish. Something about floating around dead at the bottom of the ocean petrified me of swimming in the ocean forever. A bunch of other cliche under waters of course happen including a slow drowning and some guy of course goes mad and ends up killing himself in the process of killing everyone.
In the end, this movie is more of a Sci-fi movie but definitely can fit into a horror category. If you like stupid under water themed movie this is right up your creek, but it's more of a scary movie for anyone who's terrified of water. Once again this is one of the few movies that made me a little edgy at night with bad dreams, so they must have done something right.

Okay, I've got a memory just like this, but I've never ever been able to find out the name of the movie. All I know is that I was unnaturally, and unjustifiably, scared out of my mind. It wasn't even the whole movie either, just one scene I caught randomly on television. It was an image of a ghost woman floating away from a window (black and white, very old movie) and fading into the darkness of the night. Then, the woman who saw this happen goes outside of the room to see the same ghost woman hanging from a noose from the chandelier in the middle of the stairwell.
For a full week, I couldn't look out of windows at night.
What is it about being scared as a child that just throws all common sense away? It took a lot to get over that fear, and it has left an everlasting memory in my head for this long. It is one of those things that I will never ever forget.
It has also always peaked my interest to figure out just what other people are unnaturally scared of, seeing as I don't have any phobias or anything, because I don't understand having an irrational fear everyday. I guess I am afraid of falling from heights, and afraid of other people falling from heights, but not actually being up high.
Fear's weird.
I believe, after some years, that I figured out it was the original House on Haunted Hill, with Vincent Price. I don't know for sure, and it may be a long time before I ever try and find out...
I've never seen Sphere or even heard of it but I loved your post. I especially liked the part about how when you're 10, you figure out that your 4th grade teacher is out to get you and that PG-13 movies rock. It's so true. This reminds me of the show "Are You Afraid of the Dark." This show used to terrify me to no end. Just this past year, my friends and I found it in the sale bin at WalMart and bought the DVD with a couple episodes. It was amazing how poorly this show was put together. It's just funny how scary something can be when you're young.
