What happens when you blend two great genres of movies together. You get the horror comedy. These movies are full of creepy and disturbing images, but full of sarcasm, humor, and over dramatization. I can honestly say from all sub genres of horror these are my favorite and I hope to explore a few of these films ( old and new) that are capable of attracting huge audiences and remain dominant in pop culture for decades. Also developing one of my themes of when "we" were young, I hope these movies can open some memories of your past.
Beetlejuice was released in 1988 and featured a few well known actors including: Winona Ryder as angst-ridden teenager Lydia, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a recently deceased couple only visible by Lydia forced to deal with living intruders in their home, and Michael Keaton as the bio-exorcist Beetlejuice. This movie wa
s directed by Tim Burton who has produced multiple twisted and original movies through his career. The film is full of dark camera shooting and cleverly designed undead creatures. Although not a terrifying movie, this movie has the perfect blend of horror and comedy. It's had a lot of mainstream success even spawning off a cartoon for a few seasons.
Throughout the film you face the dilemmas of a married couple who die in a car accident. After beginning their journey in the afterlife they realize that a nuisance of a family are moving into their home. The
couple decides to take matters into their own hands and befriend the daughter of the family and hire a "bio-exorcist." Explaining the plot of this film is rather confusing and seeing any of the comical haunting scenes are sure to make you smile. The movie definitely displays a dark side and could be understandably creepy for the weak stomached still. This movie is full of unique of surprises and original ideas such as the possessed dinner scene. This defintely is in my top 3 horror comedies and when you think about it there are a lot.
This film features multiple gags and scenes from Burton's mind. Even if you're not interested in seeing this movie it is very original and reminds me of a time when every movie wasn't a sequel, spin-off, remake, or book. Hope you all take a closer gander at more horror comedies than just Scary Movie(s) cause they are definitely an excellent guilty pleasure.
